AMH 0.8 pregnancy chances - Is IVF and Natural Pregnancy Possible?

In this article we discuss whether an AMH of 0.8 is enough for pregnancy, either by IVF or through a natural pregnancy.

What is AMH(Anti Mullerian Hormone)?

AMH, or Anti-Müllerian Hormone, is a hormone produced by the ovaries. It helps doctors estimate a woman's ovarian reserve, or how many eggs she has left. This information is important for fertility treatment planning, like IVF, as it helps predict how a woman may respond to ovarian stimulation.

How is AMH measured?

AMH is measured by drawing a sample of blood from your vein. The sample is transported to the lab and there it is usually analyzed by a variety of automated analyzers.

These analyzers use techniques like EIA, ELISA, or CMIA to detect the AMH levels. These analyzers include the Roche, Beckmann Coulter and Abbott Platforms

By providing accurate measurements of AMH levels, these automated systems empower healthcare professionals to make informed decisions regarding fertility treatments and reproductive health management.

What is the normal range of AMH and how is an AMH of 0.8 graded?

A normal AMH level is usually considered to be between 1.1 and 4 ng/ml. For clinical purposes, AMH is usually recognized as being above or below a cut-off value of 1.1 ng/ml.
AMH Range Inference
<1.1 ng/ml Lower chances of pregnancy through IVF
>1.1 ng/ml Higher chances of pregnancy through IVF

Is an AMH of 0.8 enough for normal pregnancy?

AMH levels cannot be used to predict the chances of a natural pregnancy. AMH is a marker of how many eggs or oocytes are available. It does not give any indication of the quality or viability of these eggs. Across age groups, research has shown that AMH cannot predict your chances of getting pregnany naturally. As such an AMH of 0.8 does not mean that you cannot have a natural pregnancy. Natural pregnancies have been reported even with undetectable AMH levels.

What is IVF and how does AMH 0.8 affect the outcome of IVF for pregnancy?

IVF or in-vitro-fertilization techniques are gaining importance due to low fertility rates. AMH is a key marker to determine which patients are a good fit for IVF. To judge the impact of an AMH level of 0.8 on IVF success rates, we take a look at the various terms used to understand IVF techniques. The following table lists the impact an AMH level of 0.8 may have on IVF outcomes.

Table showing how AMH of 0.8 affects IVF and pregnancy

IVF Component What it Means Impact of AMH 0.8
Eggs Oocytes are egg cells found in a woman's ovaries. When combined with sperm, they become embryos. Oocytes are fundamental for human reproduction. AMH 0.8 will mean, there are fewer oocytes available for pregnancy
Oocyte Retrieval - How many eggs can be obtained? Oocyte retrieval in IVF is when doctors get eggs from ovaries. They give medicine to help the eggs grow first. Then, they use a small surgery to take the eggs out. This is a helpful step for couples who want to have a baby. AMH 0.8 will mean there are fewer oocytes retrieved, and hence a poorer chance of pregnancy.
Mature Eggs In IVF, mature oocytes are the eggs that doctors collect from ovaries. These eggs are ready to join with sperm to make a baby. Doctors use medicine to help these eggs grow before taking them out. Mature oocytes have the best chance of turning into healthy embryos, bringing joy to hopeful couples. AMH 0.8 will mean there are fewer mature oocytes, and hence fewer chances for a successfull assisted pregnancy
Fertilization Fertilization in IVF is when sperm joins with a mature egg to start forming an embryo. After retrieving mature eggs and collecting sperm, doctors mix them together in a lab dish. They carefully monitor this dish to see if any eggs are fertilized. Successful fertilization means the start of a potential pregnancy. AMH 0.8, since it is less than 1.1 is associated with lower chances of fertilization taking place.
Embryo Transfer Embryo transfer in IVF is when doctors place fertilized embryos into a woman's uterus. After fertilizing eggs with sperm in a lab dish, doctors select healthy embryos. They then use a thin tube to gently transfer one or more embryos into the uterus. This hopeful step aims to start a pregnancy. AMH 0.8, since it is below 1.1 is associated with lower rates of successfull embryo transfer
Birth In IVF treatment, live birth means having a baby after treatment. After creating embryos in a lab by joining eggs and sperm, doctors carefully transfer them into the uterus. If one of these embryos grows and develops successfully, it can result in a pregnancy. This is a hopeful step for couples trying to start a family. AMH levels have not shown any direct independent correlation with live birth rates in patients undergoing IVF cycles. This means that AMH of 0.8 alone cannot predict the chances of live birth.
