Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), also known as sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), are infections that are primarily spread through sexual contact. They can affect both men and women, and their symptoms can vary widely.
The tests covered in this panel include:
  1. HIV Test - Checks for HIV/AIDS Virus
  2. Hepatitis B Test - Checks for Hepatitis B Virus Affecting Liver
  3. Hepatitis C Test - Checks for Hepatitis C Virus Affecting Liver
  4. Herpes Simplex 2 Test - Checks for Herpes Virus known to cause warts around genital area
  5. Chlamydia Antibody Test - Checks for Chlamydia a common STD, that causes discharge
  6. Syphilis Test - Checks for the bacteria causing Syphilis an STD that causes a painless wound on intimate areas

Viral Sexually Transmitted Diseases

These include 4 major infections described in the table below:

Disease Description
Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) HSV is of two types - HSV-1 often causes oral cold sores, while HSV-2 is typically associated with genital herpes. Both types can cause sores or blisters in the genital or oral areas, and the virus remains in the body for life.
HIV/AIDS HIV attacks the immune system, weakening the body's ability to fight infections. AIDS is the advanced stage of HIV infection. While there is no cure, antiretroviral therapy (ART) can manage the virus and delay the progression to AIDS.
Hepatitis B Hepatitis B virus (HBV) can lead to acute or chronic liver infections. It is spread through contact with infected blood, semen, or other bodily fluids. Vaccination is available to prevent HBV infection.
Hepatitis C Hepatitis C virus (HCV) primarily infects the liver and can lead to chronic liver disease. It is also transmitted through contact with infected blood and lacks a preventive vaccine.

Bacterial Sexually Transmitted Diseases

These include diseases that are bacterial in nature

Disease Description
Chlamydia Caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis, chlamydia can affect the genital tract, urethra, and rectum. Symptoms may include genital pain, discharge, and burning during urination. It can lead to serious complications if left untreated, such as pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility.
Syphilis Caused by the bacterium Treponema Pallidum, syphilis starts as a chancre or an ulcer on the initmate area, and later on spreads to other parts of the body like the heart, and even the brain. The disease can be completely cured if treated appropriately.

Infections Not Covered

HPV and Gonorrhea are not included in our panel as HPV requires a scraping from the abscess/lesion on your intimate part, and Gonorrhea also requires a swab to be taken from discharge that you may have. These samples are collected by gynecologists or venereal disease doctors, only when there are grounds to suspect these infections. As such they are not routinely tested

How soon does this STD Test Panel detect infections?

Our STD Package is a screening test that is aimed at screening and early diagnosis of STD Infections. Each Virus has a different timeline of how soon it can be detected.

While HIV can be detected from the 3rd week onwards, antibodies for Hepatitis C and Chlamydia and even Syphilis can take longer, upto 6 months.

The panel can detect infections provided there is a minimum time from exposure. We use state of the art 4th generation tests and antibody assays as well as double test methods in some cases, to ensure best possible and accurate results.

HIV Test - Detects after minimum 3 weeks

The 4th generation HIV Test (WHO Approved) that we use, has a minimum detection period of 21 days. The sensitivity of the test keeps improving after this point in time. If you were infected less than 21 days ago, the test may be falsely negative.

Hepatitis B - Upto 3 months

The hepatitis B antigen can be detected reliably after around 10-12 weeks of exposure.

Hepatitis C, Syphilis, Chlaymydia - Upto 6 months

The hepatitis C antibodies can be detected from around 3-6 months after exposure.

Herpes Simplex Virus - Igm Antibodies - Minimum 3 weeks to 1 month

Antibodies to HSV2 or herpes simplex viurs 2 can be detected around 10-21 days at earliest. These antibodies may not be present after the infection has been cured but can also persist.

Is this the Right STD Test Panel for you in Pune?

Our STD Panel Test is for you if you suspect that you may have been exposed to an STD or STI recently. While screening guidelines vary, here are the main reasons to consider yourself an ideal candidate

You had unprotected intimate contact with a partner whose status you do not know

Unprotected intimate contact can transmit a variety of STD's. All the STD's in our package are the most common STD's that are transmitted. While Hepatitis B is the most easily transmissible viral infection, Chlamydia and Herpes to may spread. Hepatitis C has a lower propensity for transmission but is usually to be ruled out.

You were exposed to body fluids like saliva, semen, or vaginal secretions, or blood from a know carrier

Different body fluids have different chances of transmitting STD's. Semen and vaginal secretions have higher viral concentrations, while blood is also well capable of transmitting these infections. If a body fluid splashed on you or your intimate parts or more seriously on a cut or bruise that you have, you should consider yourself to get tested.

You received a blood transfusion from an unknown source, or one whose status was unclear

Blood transfusions are a very common source of STD's since blood is usually transfused in sufficiently large amounts to cause a sizable viral load to enter your body. If you had a blood transfusion and are unsure about the protocols at that facility, you should get yourself tested.

Why is Gonorrhea Test not included?

The Gonorrhea bacteria are usually found in the urine or in discharge from your intimate parts. The Gonorrhea test is isually done on a swab that contains the discharge and it is not done on blood. Gonorrhea can also be tested using PCR or molecular assays. You can check out our Urine STD Panel for the same.

What about the HPV or Human Papilloma Virus Test?

HPV Is usually tested on scrapings taken from warts on your intimate areas. These scrapings are done by Skin doctors or gynecologists and sent to the lab. Another possibility to test for HPV is from a special scraping device meant to be used by gynecologists. Testing for HPV is not routinely done in the blood and so we do not include this in our primary package. You can check out our HPV test page for more information.

Can I test for HIV if i was infected very recently?

The 4th generation HIV test that is a part of our panel, will only give accurate results after 3-6 weeks as mentioned above. Recent infections may not be detected. For very recent infections check out our HIV-RNA Profile Page.

If I already tested negative for HIV should I test again?

If you already had a 4th generation test within the last 6 weeks, it may not be very useful to test again. If your last test was more than 2-3 months ago, and you suspect you had a very likely exposure, you can definitely test again.

If I test negative for HIV, does that mean I don't need to do the other STD Panel tests?

Testing negative for one virus does not mean that you do not have the other infections.

What are the causes of discharge or pus relating to STD's?

Discharge or pus is a sign that your body is fighting the infection. It can be caused by a variety of bacterial or viral infections. The most common causes of discharge or Gonorrhea or Chlamydia. Creamy whitish discharge may also be seen in some fungal infections, however these are not sexually transmitted.

Tests for Discharge in STD's

A variety of both screening and molecular tests can be done to diagnose discharge. These include microscopic analysis of the discharge to check if we can directly see the bacteria. This test is called Gram Stain. N.Gonorrhea can be easily detected by means of Gram Staining. Another test that can be done is called Bacterial Culture. In this test the discharge is inoculated on a culture medium and attempted to be grown. If the bacteria are present they can be seen on the culture medium. Molecular or PCR Tests can also be done to directly detect the presence of bacterial DNA in the discharge. This test is more time taking and expensive.

Molecular or PCR Tests for STD in Pune

PCR or molecular DNA Testing is the newest and most accurate test for STD's. It can be done to detect the presence of N.Gonorrhea, as well as Chlamydia - the two most common bacterial infections causing STD's.

How is DNA PCR or molecular testing for STD's done?

PCR is a technology which can detect the smallest possible amount of a bacterium or virus in a sample. The technology is able to duplicate the DNA of the organisms and bring it to detectable levels.

How long does PCR Testing for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea take?

PCR Testing for chlamydia or Gonorrhea takes roughly 3-5 days. The results may be available earlier if no trace of the bacteria was detected.

Will the test detect the amount or number of bacteria?

What is the cost of the combined PCR Test for Gonorrhea and Chlamydia?

The combined test costs between 6k to 7k, please enquire with the lab for current prices.

Low Cost tests for bacterial Sexually Transmitted DIseases
