The fasting sugar test shows how well the body handles sugar, after a prolonged fast

When a person fasts for 8-12 hours, the body uses up most of the sugar for energy. As a result, the value after 12 hours, in a normal person should be below 100 mg/dl. A value above 100 is usually a sign of poor sugar tolerance.

How do I know that I need a fasting sugar test?

Do this test if you have 1 or more of the following symptoms :

  • Excessive Thirst and Urination: If you find yourself to be constantly thirsty and visiting the loo very often, it may be a sign of diabetes.
  • Constantly craving sweet foods: Wanting to eat all the time, preferably sweet foods, is another sign of poor sugar control and diabetes
  • Blurring of vision: Sudden blurring of vision may be a sign of diabetes, if unrelated to your eyes.
  • Skin infections: Repeated small skin infections in the nails or fingers.
  • Sweet smelling urine: If your urine smells sweet, or fruity it may be a sign of diabetes and ketones.
  • Rapid Weight Gain: Any sudden or rapid change of weight is a risk factor for diabetes.

How is the test done?

This is a simple blood. You need to fast for 8-12 hours before the test. To prepare for the test

  • Fast for 8-12 hours : Fasting overnight, for around 12 hours is requird.
  • No food is allowed : Do not eat anything for 12 hours before the test.
  • Water is allowed : Plain water without any sugar or additives is allowed. Tea/coffee is not allowed

To perform this test, a sample of blood will be drawn from your vein, by inserting a sterile needle. The blood sample will then be analyzed in the lab.

What is the normal range of fasting sugar test?

The normal range for the fasting sugar test is between 70 to 100 mg/dl. The following table lists different levels of fasting sugar and what they mean :

Who should do this test?

Fasting sugar test should be done by the following groups of people:

  • Overweight and Obese : People who ar obese should have a HBA1C test to screen for diabetes.
  • Heart Patients - People with heart blockage should do the test
  • Pregnancy - Pregnant women should do the test during their ante natal checkups
  • Routine Checkups - HBA1C test should be done by all adults over the age of 35 at least once a year.
