When you are infected with Hepatitis C Virus (HCV), your body creates antibodies to fight against the virus. This is a blood test which measures the levels of these antibodies

What is Hepatitis C?

Hepatitis C is a virus that infects the liver. It is transmitted by contaminated blood transfusion or use of shared needles and syringes

Hepatitis C is detected by blood tests. HCV Antibody Test is a first line screening test to detect exposure to Hepatitis C. Other tests include HCV RNA Tests

Who should do this test?

HCV Antibody test should be done by people who have received organ transplants before 1980 or have received unsafe blood transufsions, or have a history of shared needle use.

Test Accuracy and Earliet Possible date of detection

The test is 99.8% accurate and is positive around 6 months after exposure. The test may have to be repeated if initially negaive. The test detects total antibodies (IgG and IgM) against hepatitis C Virus

How is the test done?

This is a simple blood test and requires no special preparation. You do not need to be fasting for this test.

To perform this test, a sample of blood will be drawn from your vein, by inserting a sterile needle. The blood sample will then be analyzed in the lab.

What will be included in the report?

The report will include a single result - either Reactive OR Non-reactive. The test will also mention a ratio called the SNR ratio, which indicates how much antibody was detected. A reactive result means that the you were exposed to Hepatitis C at some point in your life. A non-reactive result means that you were never exposed to Hepatitis C in your life.
