What is a testosterone test?

Testosterone is a normal hormone, present in men and women. A testosterone test is a diagnostic test to measure its level in blood. A sample of blood is drawn from your arm, and processed in the lab using an automated analyzer.

Why is a testosterone test important?

Low levels of testosteron in men can lead to low sperm count. High levels of testosterone in women can interfere with normal egg maturation.

The test is important to diagnose infertility in couples who cannot conceive.

How do I know that I need a testosterone test?

Testing for testosterone levels is usually advised in couples who are unable to conceive, or women with PCOS(Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome).

In women, this test may help if symptoms include :

  • Acne: Acne, on the arms or face or back, is usually the first sign of higher than normal testosterone levels.
  • Irregular periods: Irregular cycles or missed periods, are a common complaint and may be caused by abnormal hormone levels
  • Facial Hair Growth: Excessive facial hair, above the lips or over the chin may be seen in hormonal imbalances
  • Rapid Weight Gain: Sudden increase in weight, or fluctuations in weight are another sign of hormonal imabalance
  • Failure to conceive naturally: Infertility, after trying for more than a year, is another sign of hormonal disturbances, which need to be investigated.

In men the following symptoms indicate need for hormonal tests :

  • Low Sperm Count: A low sperm count may be seen due to low levels or high levels of fertility hormones
  • Decreased Libido: Lower than normal sex drive may be due to hormonal imbalance
  • Gynecomastia: Men with larger than normal breasts, or nipples should get tested for hormonal imbalance

How is the test done?

This is a simple blood test and requires no special preparation. You do not need to be fasting for this test.

To perform this test, a sample of blood will be drawn from your vein, by inserting a sterile needle. The blood sample will then be analyzed in the lab.

What will be included in the report?

The test includes the value of serum testosterone. Note that this test measures total testosterone

The normal range in adult males is 240.0-950.0. The normal range in adult women is 6.0-86.0

Testosterone test should be done by the following groups of people:

  • Women with PCOD : Women who are suspected of having PCOD (Polycystic Ovrian Syndrome) should do this test.
  • Couples with Infertility - Couples who cannot conceive can do this test
  • Professional Body builders & Power Lifters - Professional body builders may monitor their exogenous supplement intake based on testosterone levels
