What is this test?

The Kidney Function Test is a blood test that measures levels of urea and creatinine in your blood. A sample of your blood is taken and analyzed in the lab.

What is kidney function?

The kidney is the body's filtration plant. Its role is to remove waste products from blood.

If the kidney is not functioning properly, levels of waste substances increase in the blood. This test measures - urea and creatinine, waste products that are present in very small quantities in the blood. If the levels of these substances (urea/creatinine) are higher than normal, it means your kidneys are not working properly

How do I know that I need a Kidney Function Test?

• Diabetic: Diabetes often leads to kidney damage, and so diabetics should get a kidney function test every few months.

How is the test done?

This is a simple blood test and requires no special preparation. You do not need to be fasting for this test.

To perform this test, a sample of blood will be drawn from your vein, by inserting a sterile needle. The blood sample will then be analyzed in the lab.

• Creatinine : Waste product of protein breakdown
• Urea : Waste product of protein breakdown
• Blood Urea Nitrogen : Calculated from Urea value
• GFR : Calculated from value of creatinine, gives estimation of filtration rate of kidney
