What is this test?
This is a blood test to confirm whether a person has already had a heart attack. A sample of blood is drawn from the vein, and the level of Troponin-I is measured in the lab. The level of Troponin I increases for some hours after a heart attack and comes back to normal again after a few days
When to do a Troponin I test?
Troponin I test is usually done in hospitals after a patient has already been admitted. If you have symptoms of a heart attack, it is advisable to see a doctor immediately and not wait for blood test results. That said, the following symptoms may warrant this test :
- Chest Pain: Pain on the chest, upper stomach or along the inside of your left arm could all be signs of heart trouble and should be investigated.
- Check pain after climibing stairs: Chest pain after heavy activity, or cardiovascular effort should be investigated with testing.
- High Blood Pressure: If present with chest pain, it should be investigated
- Family History of Heart Disease: If you are a first degree relative of someone with heart disease, it may be advisable to get tested as a part of routine checkups.
How is the test done?
This is a simple blood test and requires no special preparation. You do not need to be fasting for this test.
To perform this test, a sample of blood will be drawn from your vein, by inserting a sterile needle. The blood sample will then be analyzed in the lab.
What is the normal range of Troponin-I?
The normal range of HBA1C is between 0 to 20 for men and between 0 to 15 for women.
How soon after heart attack should this test be done?
Troponin-I is elevated following heart muscle damage. This is usually after a reduction in the blood supply to the heart as is seen in a heart attack.
The levels of troponin-I should be tested within 12 hours of the suspected heart attack. They remain eleveated for several days.
Troponin I is a confirmatory test for heart muscle death.
