What is a urine test?

Urine test is a lab test done on your urine sample to check for infection, diabetes and the overall health of your kidneys. It can also tell if you are dehydrated, or have a serious liver disease.

How do I know that I need a urine test?

Do this test if you have :

  • Burning after passing urine: Burning after urination is a sign of infection and should be investigated.
  • Pain while passing urine: Pain while urinating, together with fever, or chills may be a sign of urine infection
  • Jaundice: Yellowness of eyes, skin and fingernails, may indicate hepatitis or a liver disease and can be screened in urine test.
  • Frothy foul smelling urine: Could be early sign of urinary tract infection or kidney disease.

How is the test done?

This is a simple urine test. You will be provided with a urine container from the lab. You are required to provide preferably the first morning sample (first time you pass urine after waking up). If this not possible, any random sample can also be provided.

Follow these steps to collect the sample :

  • Clean your private part with a moist tissue paper or cloth.
  • Start urinating into the toilet, and let the first 30% of urine, fall into the toilet
  • Collect 15 ml of the subsequent part of the urine.
  • Cap the container and write your name on it, as well as the time of collection
  • If you are collecting the sample at home, jeep it in the fridge till the lab picks up the sample.

What will be included in the report?

This test includes the following parameters :

  • Bilirubin : - Normal waste product, incrased amount is found in urine in liver diseases
  • Blood - Normally not seen in urine, present in case of kidney stones or infections
  • Casts - These are microscopic collections of dead cells in the urine, normally they are absent.
  • Color : Normal urine is light yellow in color
  • Crystals : deposits of minerals in urine, some are normal, others may be seen in kidney stones.
  • Ketones - chemicals caused by breakdown of proteins, considered abnormal if present, ONLY seen in diabetes.
  • Leucocyte Esterase - Seen in Infection
  • Nitrites - Seen in Infection
  • Pus Cells - Seen in Infection
  • Red Cells - Seen in kidney stone
  • Squamous Cells
  • Specific Gravity
  • pH
  • Urobilinogen - Seen in liver disease
