What is window period in STD Infections?

Window period is the time after getting exposed to the infection, during which the infection cannot be detected.

Window period is variable and can be different for different tests.

  • HIV Test - Detects at 3 weeks:The HIV 4th generation test can start detecting the virus as early as 3 weeks. However, detection improves around 42 days to its peak. The test has a 99.8% detection rate in control subjects.
  • Hepatitis B Test - Detects after 3-4 weeks:This test checks for the presence of Hepatitis B virus in the body. The test directly detects the viral antigen and so is positive around 3-4 weeks after infection.
  • Syphilis Test - Upto 6 months:This test also detects antibodies against syphilis, and so it can take upto 6 months to show on the test.
  • HSV 2 IgM Test - Upto 3 months:This test detects the rapid response antibodies against the Herpest Simplex 2 virus. These antibodies are created soon after the infection and stay elevated for a few weeks to months. Later on they wane away. So this test is only useful to detect a recent HSV2 Infection and not so much for older infections.
