Overview

HCV RNA - Qualitative Detection is a laboratory test used to detect the presence of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) in a patients blood sample. The test uses a technique called polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to amplify and detect the genetic material (RNA) of the virus. The test is performed on a blood sample obtained from the patient and results are reported as either positive or negative for the presence of HCV RNA. The test is commonly used to diagnose a current HCV infection or to monitor the effectiveness of treatment.

Who should do this test?

Individuals with a history of injection drug use or other high-risk behaviors, such as unprotected sex with multiple partners or receiving a blood transfusion before 1992.

Individuals who have received an organ transplant or blood transfusion in the past, particularly if it occurred before 1992 when screening for HCV was not routine.

Individuals with symptoms of liver disease, such as jaundice, fatigue, or abdominal pain, or those who have abnormal liver function tests.

What to do if the test is abnormal?

The first step a person should take if their HCV RNA - Qualitative Detection result is abnormal is to schedule an appointment with their healthcare provider. This test is used to detect the presence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the blood, so an abnormal result indicates that the virus is present.
