How soon after infection is the HbsAg test positive?
Hepatitis B Surface Antigen is usually detectable in the blood around 38-40 days after exposure (known as window period). The test can detect the presence of HbsAg after around 6 weeks, but a repeat test is advisable after 3 months/12 weeks for confirmation. Note that after 32 weeks or around 6-8 months, the test cannot reliably detect the virus. This is because the body tries to clear out the virus, and if successfull it disappears after 6 months. At this stage, the only way to detect a prior exposure is by testing for the Anti-HBSAg antibodies.
