What is this test?

The Liver Function Test (LFT) is a blood test that measures levels of various liver enzymes in the blood. Based on the values, doctors will decide if your liver is working appropriately

It is called liver function test, because these enzymes are made by the liver; any changes in their levels directly reflect the functioning of the liver.

How do I know if I need a Liver Function Test?

Do this test if you have :

  • Yellow eyes, skin and urine: Yellowing of eyes, skin or urine, is called jaundice, and it means the liver function has been affected.
  • Loss of apetite, heaviness on right side of stomach: Dull ache on right side of stomach for several days, and loss of apetite may be seen in hepatitis (swelling on liver).
  • Hepatitis A/B/C Patients: If you were recently diagnosed as having Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C, YOUR doctor will ask you to get this test since these viruses affect the liver function.
  • Patients on medications: Some medicines can harm the liver, those on long term medications for epilepsy, blood thinners, etc should get a periodic liver profile done.

How is the test done?

This is a simple blood test and requires no special preparation. You do not need to be fasting for this test.

To perform this test, a sample of blood will be drawn from your vein, by inserting a sterile needle. The blood sample will then be analyzed in the lab.
