What is this test?

During pregnancy, some mothers have high blood sugar. It affects the growth of the baby and can cause diseases in the baby. This test screens for high blood sugar in pregnancy by giving the mother a known amount of sugar and then checking how much blood sugar level rises.

How do I know if I need this test?

Do this test if you are pregnancy and are experiencing these symptoms.

• Excessive thirst and urination : If you find yourself drinking more water than usual and urinating more frequently that usual it may be a sign of diabetes in pregnancy.
• Blurred Vision : Sudden spells of blurred vision, together with dizziness and nausea may be signs of diabetes in pregnancy.
• Rapid Heartbeat : Increased heart rate is also a sign of diabetes if it happens very frequently

Who should do this test?

The test is normally recommended for all pregnancy mothers in the 24th week. It is even more important in mothers who fit the following criteria.

• Obese or Overweight : Women who are overweight, have a higher risk of diabetes in pregnancy and should definitely get this test done..
• Family History : There is a family history of diabetes in pregnancy in your relatives.
• IVF Pregnancies : If you are having an assisted pregnancy, it is more important to have this test
• Routine screening : The test is recommended in all pregnancies, around 24 weeks.
• Mother is already diabetic : If the mother is a diabetic, this test is essential
• History of miscarriage : Mothers who have a past history of miscarriage, due to unexplained reasons, should also get this test.

How is the test done?

This is a simple blood test and requires you to be fasting for 8-12 hours The following is the test procuedure : .

1. 8-12 hours fasting : Fast for 8-12 hours overnight.
2. Fasting blood sample : Provide the first sample in the morning, while you are fasting.
3. Drink sugar solution: The lab will provide you with a solution of 75 grams of glucose. Drink this solution. Do not eat or drink anything else, except water.
4. 1 hour sample : 1 hour after drinking the glucose solution, provide another blood sample
5. 2 hour sample : 2 hours after drinking the sugar solution, provide a third and final blood sample.

What will be included in the report?

The report includes sugar levels in each of the three samples. If 2 or more of the values are abnormal, you will be considered to have gestational diabetes mellitus. Your doctor will probably ask for further tests for confirmation. The following table shows the expected report format.
