What is Vitamin D?

Vitamin D is a nutrient required for strong bones, growth, healthy hair and good immunity. It is present in fish, and made naturally in our skin. It is further activated in the liver and kidney and its active form is called 1,25 dihydroxy-cholecalciferol. Its main role is to regulate calcium levels in the blood.

When to do this test?

Do this test if you have:

  • Frequent fractures: Vitamin D deficiency leads to weak bones and frequent fractures.
  • Bone pain: If your bones hurt, especially knees, lower back and shins, get tested.

  • Caries and tooth decay: Repeated cavities may be a sign of calcium and vitamin d deficiency

Frequently Asked Questions

Vitamin D2 and Vitamin D3 are isomers - proteins that are very similar except for a very small difference. Vitamin D2 is present in plants, while D3 is present in fish and also made naturally in human skin. In the body Vitamin D2 has weaker action as compared to Vitamin D3. Most lab tests will measure Vitamin D3 as its level more accurately reflects what is happening inside the body.

Vitamin D3, is converted in the liver to 25-Hydroxy-Cholecalciferol D3, which is further converted to 1,25 dihydroxy-cholecalciferol D3 in the kidney. 1,25 dihydroxy-cholecalciferol D3 - is the hormonally active form. 25-Hydroxy-Cholecalciferol D3 is the intermediate form. Lab tests measure 25-Hydroxy-Cholecalciferol D3 as it is easier to measure in a blood sample. These forms are virtually equal for all practical purposes.

Vitamin D can exist as Vitamin D2 and D3. But since Vitamin D3 is far more active than D2, doctors often use Vitamin D and Vitamin D3 interchangably.

Lab tests measure Vitamin D3 because it is the most active form of Vitamin D. Hence a Vitamin D3 test gives a good idea of the total Vitamin D activity inside the body.

Yes, all dietary forms of Vitamin D - whether in the form of supplements or taken in food, are eventually converted to 25-Hydroxy-Cholecalciferol D3 in the liver, and our test measures this final converted form. So, even if you are taking supplements, the effective level of Vitamin D3 will be measured accurately in our test.
