What is this test?

Fertility in men and women is controlled by hormones released from the brain. These hormones are FSH, LH and Prolactin. Abnormal levels of these hormones can cause irregular periods and infertility in women. In men, abnormal levels can affect sperm count. This test measures levels of these hormones to know the cause of infertility.

What are FSH, LH and prolactin?

FSH, LH and prolactin are fertility hormones that regulate egg release in women and sperm production in men. Here are a few specific details

• FSH: Follicle Stimulating Hormone is released from the brain and causes proper egg development in women. It also promotes sperm formation in men.
• LH: Leutinizing Hormone, is also released from the brain, and its role is to release eggs from ovaries in women. In men it helps proper sperm growth and maturation
• Prolactin: Released from brain, its role in women is to help release milk for the newborn and it also controls libido in both men and women.

How do I know that I need a feritlity hormones test?

Testing for FSH, LH and prolactin levels is usually advised in couples who are unable to conceive.

In women, this test may help if symptoms include :

• Irregular periods: Irregular cycles or missed periods, are a common complaint and may be caused by abnormal hormone levels
• Facial Hair Growth: Excessive facial hair, above the lips or over the chin may be seen in hormonal imbalances
• Rapid Weight Gain: Sudden increase in weight, or fluctuations in weight are another sign of hormonal imabalance
• Failure to conceive naturally: Infertility, after trying for more than a year, is another sign of hormonal disturbances, which need to be investigated.

In men the following symptoms indicate need for hormonal tests :

• Low Sperm Count: A low sperm count may be seen due to low levels or high levels of fertility hormones
• Decreased Libido: Lower than normal sex drive may be due to hormonal imbalance
• Gynecomastia: Men with larger than normal breasts, or nipples should get tested for hormonal imbalance

How is the test done?

This is a simple blood test and requires no special preparation. You do not need to be fasting for this test.

To perform this test, a sample of blood will be drawn from your vein, by inserting a sterile needle. The blood sample will then be analyzed in the lab.

When to do this test?

In women, it is recommended to do the test between days 2 to 5 of the cycle.

For men, the test can be done at anytime.
