Frequently Asked Questions

During pregnancy the normal range of lipid profile is different and the values depend on the month of pregnancy. During the first three months the range is between 60-153 mg/dl. During month 3-6, the normal range is between 77-184 mg/dl. During month 8-9 the normal range is between 101-224 mg/dl

In the fasting state, the values of triglycerides will be lower than in the non-fasting state. This is the major difference in lipid panel in the fasting vs non-fasting state. The other three components namely HDL, LDL, and total cholesterol are not much different whether the patient is fasting or not.

The lipid panel or lipid profile consists of 5 seperate tests. Of these tests the 'total triglycerides' is the only component which gets affected by eating. Secondly, most of the guidelines and normal values established for lipid profile are based on blood samples taken from patients in the fasting state. Thus to get accurate values for the triglycerides part of the lipid panel, and to make sure that the rest of the values are comparable with reference values, it is better to do the test in the fasting state.

A generally accepted value of 12 hours of fasting is recommeded before having a lipid profile test.
