STD Infections - Understanding and Testing for STDs

  • What are STD Infections

STD infections are diseases passed from one person to another through sexual contact. These include infections like HIV, hepatitis B, and herpes.

  • How are STD Infections diagnosed?

The best way to diagnose STD's is by blood tests - either screening tests or DNA PCR tests. The PCR tests are able to detect viruses earlier, but are more expensive.

  • When should testing be done for STD Infections?

You should get tested if you have new or multiple sexual partners, or if you have any symptoms of an STD. It's also good to get tested regularly if you are sexually active.

  • How are STD Infections treated?

Treatment depends on the type of STD. Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Chlamydia and Herpes are all well treated and cured by medications. HIV cannot be cured, but it can be contained to allow you to live a normal life for several years.

Do this panel of tests if you have any of the following symptoms :

Repeatedly falling ill with small infections could be a sign of low immunity and HIV infection

  • Sores or Blisters

Sores or blisters around your private areas or mouth - are seen in syphilis and Herpes

  • Swellings in the groin

These may be seen in Chlamydia or Herpes and several other infections

  • Weight Loss

Losing weight suddenly without trying, could be a sign of HIV

How soon can STD's be diagnosed?

The following list describes the window periods of the STD Blood Tests and how soon they can detect infections

Each Sexually Transmitted Infection(STI) takes a different time frame to be detected. This is because many of them are only detectable after the viral proteins are sufficiently elevated to allow detection. In case of others (HCV, Syphilis, Chlamydia) - we can only detect antibodies made against them by the body, and these antibodies can take several months to become elevated and detectable

  • HIV Test - Detects at 3 weeks

The HIV 4th generation test can start detecting the virus as early as 3 weeks. However, detection improves around 42 days to its peak. The test has a 99.8% detection rate in control subjects.

  • Hepatitis B Test - Detects after 3-4 weeks

This test checks for the presence of Hepatitis B virus in the body. The test directly detects the viral antigen and so is positive around 3-4 weeks after infection.

  • HCV Antibodies Test

This test looks for antibodies made against the hepatitis C virus. Since we are looking for antibodies, these can take upto 6 months to become detectable. Thus the detection period for HCV antibodies is 3-6 months.

  • Syphilis Test - Upto 6 months

This test also detects antibodies against syphilis, and so it can take upto 6 months to show on the test.

  • HSV 2 IgM Test - Upto 3 months

This test detects the rapid response antibodies against the Herpest Simplex 2 virus. These antibodies are created soon after the infection and stay elevated for a few weeks to months. Later on they wane away. So this test is only useful to detect a recent HSV2 Infection and not so much for older infections.

  • Chlamydia IgG Test - After 6 months

The Chlamydia test is positive upto 6 months after infection. Before this time, it may or may not be positive. These antibodies stay positive for several years after infection and give a protective effect. Hence this test can only show that you have been exposed to Chlamydia in the past.

What is a window period?

Window period is the time after infection when an STD is not detectable. This time is variable and different depending on the test technology used and the infection
