Overview

Women have in their ovaries a large number of eggs. These reduce over age. During each menstrual cycle these eggs mature and become ova. The immature eggs, release AMH. Thus AMH helps us to know how many eggs are available. This is called ovarian reserve. AMH Test provides an estimate of how many viable eggs are still present.

What does this test help to know?

This test predicts a woman's remaining egg supply or ovarian reserve and hence is useful to know:

  • Chances of conceiving naturally : Number of viable eggs in your ovaries give an idea of your chances of conceiving naturally.
  • Reason for missed period : Amenorrhea or missed periods may be due to no futher remaining eggs.

Which symptoms may mean I need an AMH test?

Do this test if you are unable to conceive and have :

  • Irregular Periods: Irregular cycles with sudden bleeding or cycles of different lengths
  • Facial Hair Growth: Excessive hair growth on the face or lips
  • Acne: Acne especially waxing and waning with your cycle.
  • Sudden weight gain: Did you suddenly gain weight?
  • Infertility: You are not able to conceive by natural methods despite trying for a year or more.

Who should do the AMH Test?

AMH Test should be done by the following groups of women:

  • Women with infertility issues: AMH levels can help in evaluating a womans ovarian reserve, which refers to the number and quality of eggs that the ovaries can produce. Women who are having difficulty conceiving or undergoing fertility treatments may benefit from AMH testing to determine their fertility potential.
  • Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): PCOS is a hormonal disorder that can cause irregular periods, acne, and weight gain. Women with PCOS may have elevated levels of AMH, which can help in the diagnosis and management of the condition.
  • Women undergoing cancer treatment : Certain cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy, can damage the ovaries and affect fertility. Measuring AMH levels before and after cancer treatment can help in assessing the impact of treatment on ovarian function and fertility potential.

AMH Test use in IVF

How is the test done?

This is a simple blood test and requires no special preparation. You do not need to be fasting for this test.

To perform this test, a sample of blood will be drawn from your vein, by inserting a sterile needle. The blood sample will then be analyzed in the lab.

What is a good AMH level?

A good AMH level is usually between 1.5 - 4 ng/ml. Values below 0.5 are considered to be too low for fertility, while values above 4 are considered high and may be a sign of PCOD.

Normal AMH values are also calculated based on the patients age. The following table provides normal AMH values for women based on age:

Age Range
>= 0 years upto 3 years 0.11-4.2
>= 3 years upto 6 years 0.21-4.9

Frequently Asked Questions

Higher than normal AMH levels may be seen in PCOS

Lower than normal AMH levels may be seen in advanced age, or in women who have infertility.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a condition in which there are a large number of oocytes present of a particular size. These eggs are usually unable to get fertilized and produce what are called anovulatory cycles. In PCOS, it has been found that AMH levels may be 2-4 times above normal. A cut-off of 4.9ng/ml has been described. If AMH is above this value, it is strong evidence in favour of PCOS. However other markers must also be performed to conclusively diagnose PCOS. AMH alone cannot be used.

High AMH levels typically indicate a larger pool of ovarian follicles, potentially leading to a greater number of eggs retrieved during ovarian stimulation for IVF. A higher number of eggs retrieved can increase the chances of successful fertilization and embryo development during IVF, potentially improving the overall success rates of the treatment.
