What is a VDRL/RPR Test?

This is a blood test to check for syphilis infection. The test measures antibodies against syphilis. These antibodies may also be seen in people without syphilis and so the test is not specific.

VDRL stands for Venereal Disease Research Laboratory - where the test was first discovered. VDRL and RPR are variations of the same test and are commonly referred together.

What is syphilis

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by a bacterium called Treponema Pallidum. Patients with syphilis usually have a painless sore on their genital area. The disease can spread to various organs of the body like brain, heart and liver

Syphilis is detected by blood tests like VDRL Test and TPHA Test.

Who should do this test?

This test should be done by people who have unprotected intercourse with multiple partners, homosexual men, and those may have received contaminated blood transfusions. This test is also recommended for pregnant mothers.

How is the test done?

This is a simple blood test and requires no special preparation. You do not need to be fasting for this test.

To perform this test, a sample of blood will be drawn from your vein, by inserting a sterile needle. The blood sample will then be analyzed in the lab.

What will be included in the report?

The report will include a single result - either Reactive OR Non-reactive. A reactive result means that you are infected with syphilis but additional tests will have to be done for confirmation. A non-reactive result means that you are currently not infected.
