Syphilis is a common sexually transmitted disease (STD). It also spreads through contaminated blood transfusion. Syphilis causes painless sores on the genital area. If untreated it can lead to seriuos complications involving the heart, brain and liver.
This test is usually done to confirm a diagnosis of syphilis, in patients suspected of having the infection
Groups of people who should be tested for syphilis include those with multiple partners, those engaging in unprotected intercourse, and people who have had unsafe blood transfusions.
The most common sign of syphilis is a painless sore on the genitals
This is not a first line test, and is usually done when someone has already tested positive in a screening test.
This is a simple blood test and requires no special preparation. You do not need to be fasting for this test.
To perform this test, a sample of blood will be drawn from your vein, by inserting a sterile needle. The blood sample will then be analyzed in the lab.
The report will include a single result - either Positive OR Negative. A positive result means that you have been infected with syphilis at some point in your life. A negative result means that you have never been infected with syphilis.
This test is highly sensitive and specific for syphilis (around 90%). It is used as a confirmatory test and only detects proteins related to syphilis.

This test is highly specific and sensitive for syphilis. However confirmatory tests include DFA Test and PCR Tests. These tests are currently not commerically available in most labs.
