What is a thyroid test?

Thyroid is an organ present on the neck in men and women. It regulates growth, metabolism, immunity and weight. A thyroid test is a diagnostic test to measure level of 3 thyroid hormones in the blood. These are T3 (Tri-iodothyronine), T4 (Thyroxine) and TSH(Thyroidd Stimulating Hormone). A sample of blood is drawn from your arm, and processed in the lab using an automated analyzer.

How do I know that I need a thyroid test?

Do this test if you have :

  • Rapid Weight Changes: Burning after urination is a sign of infection and should be investigated.
  • Constantly feeling tired: Pain while urinating, together with fever, or chills may be a sign of urine infection
  • Changes in heart rate: Yellowness of eyes, skin and fingernails, may indicate hepatitis or a liver disease and can be screened in urine test.
  • Hair fall: Could be early sign of urinary tract infection or kidney disease.
  • Dry Skin: Could be early sign of urinary tract infection or kidney disease.
  • Constipation: Could be early sign of urinary tract infection or kidney disease.
  • Anxiety: Could be early sign of urinary tract infection or kidney disease.

How is the test done?

This is a simple blood test and requires no special preparation. You do not need to be fasting for this test.

To perform this test, a sample of blood will be drawn from your vein, by inserting a sterile needle. The blood sample will then be analyzed in the lab.

What will be included in the report?

The test includes 3 parameters - T3, T4 and TSH :

  • Tri-iodothyronine(T3) : - Hormone released by thyroid into blood. Is converted into T4 in organs.
  • Thyroxine(T4) - Main thyroid hormone responsible for all effects of thyroid
  • Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) - Released from brain, controls thyroid gland function and levels of T3 and T4.

What is the normal range of thyroid test?

The normal range for thyroid hormones is listed in the table below:

Who should do this test?

Thyroid test should be done by the following groups of people:

  • Overweight and Obese : People who ar obese should have a thyroid test as poor thyroid function can lead to weight gain.
  • Heart Patients - People with irregular heart beat should get checked for thyroid problems as it can cause heart fluttering
  • Pregnancy - Thyroid level should be mandatorily checked during pregnancy
  • Routine Checkups - Thyroid tests are normally included in routine annual checkups as it is one of the most common abnormalities
