HIV, or Human Immunodeficiency Virus, is a viral infection that spreads through sexual contact, blood transfusion and shared needle use. It weakens the body's immune system and the patient eventually is infected by other germs.
HIV is diagnosed using blood tests like the HIV Test, which checks for HIV antibodies, and the HIV-1-RNA Detection Test, which looks for the virus itself.
The test should be done if you were exposed to blood or body fluids of someone who had HIV, or if you had an unknown blood transfusion, or if you have multiple partners as a precaution.
HIV is treated with antiretroviral therapy to control the multiplication of the virus and reduce the total viral load, while protecting against other infections.
