To Prepare for this test:

  • The best time to collect the sample is the first time you pass urine in the morning.
  • Clean the external genitalia with a moist, clean tissue paper or cloth, do not use soap or gels
  • In case of male patients, it is advisable to retract the glans penis and clear away any debris or discharge
  • In case of female patients, it is advisable to clean the labia in a similar manner, and clear away any discharge or secretions that may contaminate the sample
  • Open the cap of the container, and hold it to one side, start passing urine, let the initial 30% of the urine flow freely into the toilet.
  • Letting the first 30% fall into the toilet, clears away any residues or debris, that may otherwise contaminate it.
  • Collect the next part of the sample in the container, a minimum of 12 ml is required for analysis in the lab. Less than 12 ml is considered inadequate.
  • Once you have collected at least 12 ml, move the container out of the way and cap it.
  • Do not attempt to add water, soap or any other chemicals to the sample.
  • Wipe the container from the outside with a tissue paper, and add your name to the container label.
  • If the sample cannot be analyzed immediately, store it in a dark cool environment, between 2-8 degrees.
