Overview

Serum Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (SACE) is an enzyme that plays a role in regulating blood pressure and fluid balance in the body. It is commonly measured in patients with suspected sarcoidosis, a disease that causes inflammation in various organs. SACE testing involves drawing a blood sample from the patient and measuring the level of the enzyme in the serum using a laboratory assay. Elevated levels of SACE can be indicative of sarcoidosis, although this test alone is not diagnostic and must be interpreted in conjunction with other clinical findings.

Who should do this test?

People suspected of having sarcoidosis: Serum Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (SACE) is a useful biomarker for diagnosing sarcoidosis, a condition that causes inflammation in different parts of the body, especially the lungs and lymph nodes. Elevated levels of SACE are often seen in people with sarcoidosis.

People with suspected or diagnosed Gauchers disease: SACE levels can be elevated in people with Gauchers disease, a genetic disorder that causes the buildup of fatty substances in different organs of the body, including the spleen, liver, and bone marrow. Elevated levels of SACE can be used to monitor the progression of the disease and the effectiveness of treatment.

People with hypertension or heart failure: SACE levels can be used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment in people with hypertension or heart failure, as the enzyme is involved in the regulation of blood pressure and fluid balance in the body. However, SACE levels are not routinely used for the diagnosis of these conditions.

What to do if the test is abnormal?

Consult with a healthcare provider: If the result of the Serum Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) test is abnormal, the first step is to consult with a healthcare provider. The healthcare provider will be able to interpret the results and determine the appropriate next steps.

Further testing: The healthcare provider may recommend further testing to determine the underlying cause of the abnormal ACE result. This may include additional blood tests, imaging studies, or other diagnostic tests.

Treatment: Depending on the underlying cause of the abnormal ACE result, the healthcare provider may recommend treatment. This may include medications, lifestyle modifications, or other interventions to manage the underlying condition.
