Overview

Prolactin is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that stimulates milk production in women. A prolactin test is a blood test that measures the level of prolactin in the blood. The test is performed by drawing blood from a vein in the arm and sending it to a laboratory for analysis. Abnormal levels of prolactin can indicate a variety of medical conditions, including pituitary gland disorders, thyroid problems, and certain medications.

Who should do this test?

Women experiencing infertility: Prolactin levels can be a contributing factor to infertility, and high levels of prolactin can interfere with ovulation and menstruation.

Individuals with symptoms of hyperprolactinemia: High levels of prolactin can cause a range of symptoms, including breast milk production in non-pregnant women, erectile dysfunction in men, and decreased sex drive in both sexes.

Individuals with pituitary gland disorders: The pituitary gland is responsible for producing and regulating prolactin levels, and disorders such as pituitary tumors can cause abnormally high or low levels of prolactin.

What to do if the test is abnormal?

Consult with a medical professional: If the result of a prolactin test is abnormal, it is recommended that the person consults with a medical professional such as an endocrinologist or gynecologist. These doctors specialize in hormonal imbalances that affect fertility, menstruation, and sexual health.

Further testing: The doctor may order additional tests to confirm the abnormal prolactin levels and to identify any underlying conditions. For example, they may request an MRI to check for a pituitary tumor or a thyroid function test to rule out hypothyroidism.

Treatment: Treatment for abnormal prolactin levels depends on the underlying cause. Medications such as dopamine agonists may be prescribed to lower prolactin levels caused by a pituitary tumor or other medical conditions. Additionally, lifestyle changes such as reducing stress and increasing exercise may help to lower prolactin levels.

What is the normal range of Prolactin?

The normal range for adult males is 2.0-18.0,the normal range for adult females is 2.0-30.0
