Overview

AFP is a blood test that measures the levels of Alpha-fetoprotein in the blood. AFP is a protein that is produced by the liver and yolk sac of a developing fetus. The test is performed by drawing a blood sample from the patient, which is then sent to a laboratory for analysis. Elevated levels of AFP in the blood may indicate the presence of certain cancers or liver disease.

Who should do this test?

Pregnant women: AFP test is commonly performed during pregnancy to screen for certain birth defects, such as neural tube defects (NTDs) and chromosomal abnormalities.

People with liver disease: AFP levels may be elevated in individuals with liver disease, such as cirrhosis, hepatitis, and liver cancer. AFP testing may be used to monitor the progression of liver disease or to screen for liver cancer.

Individuals at high risk for liver cancer: People with a family history of liver cancer or those with chronic hepatitis B or C infection may be at increased risk for developing liver cancer. AFP testing may be used to screen these individuals for early detection of liver cancer.

What to do if the test is abnormal?

Consult with a healthcare provider: If the results of an AFP test are abnormal, the first thing a person should do is to consult with their healthcare provider. The provider can help interpret the results and determine if further testing is necessary.

Follow up with additional testing: Depending on the specific results of the AFP test, additional testing may be necessary to determine the underlying cause of the abnormal results. This may include imaging studies, such as an ultrasound or CT scan, or additional blood tests.

Discuss treatment options: If an underlying condition is identified, the healthcare provider will discuss treatment options with the patient. Treatment may include medication, surgery, or other interventions to manage the underlying condition and improve outcomes.
