How soon can STD's be diagnosed?

The following list describes the window periods of the STD Blood Tests and how soon they can detect infections

Each Sexually Transmitted Infection(STI) takes a different time frame to be detected. This is because many of them are only detectable after the viral proteins are sufficiently elevated to allow detection. In case of others (HCV, Syphilis, Chlamydia) - we can only detect antibodies made against them by the body, and these antibodies can take several months to become elevated and detectable

  • HIV Test - Detects at 3 weeks

The HIV 4th generation test can start detecting the virus as early as 3 weeks. However, detection improves around 42 days to its peak. The test has a 99.8% detection rate in control subjects.

  • Hepatitis B Test - Detects after 3-4 weeks

This test checks for the presence of Hepatitis B virus in the body. The test directly detects the viral antigen and so is positive around 3-4 weeks after infection.

  • Syphilis Test - Upto 6 months

This test also detects antibodies against syphilis, and so it can take upto 6 months to show on the test.

  • HSV 2 IgM Test - Upto 3 months

This test detects the rapid response antibodies against the Herpest Simplex 2 virus. These antibodies are created soon after the infection and stay elevated for a few weeks to months. Later on they wane away. So this test is only useful to detect a recent HSV2 Infection and not so much for older infections.

What is a window period?

Window period is the time after infection when an STD is not detectable. This time is variable and different depending on the test technology used and the infection
